I was born in Bakersfield and grew up in Arvin. After graduating from CSU Bakersfield, I continued my education and started my professional career in San Diego. I worked in many different clinical settings – outpatient, residential and schools. But the majority of my experience was at an inpatient behavioral health hospital.
I have 23 years of experience helping those with behavioral health difficulties. At the hospital, I worked with individuals of all ages who were in need of psychiatric and/or substance abuse treatment. I also worked many years there as a manager, creating various educational programs and training employees. I joined the Behavioral Sciences department at Bakersfield College in the spring of 2023. My previous teaching experience included several positions as a teaching assistant, adjunct faculty at the University of San Diego and the multiple training programs I developed at the hospital.
Psychology has been my life since my first semester at CSUB! The first time I ever read every single page of a textbook was when I took Abnormal Psychology. I loved studying psychology and learning about psychological disorders. My areas of greatest interest have been assessment and diagnosing, helping individuals with severe mental illness, suicide awareness and prevention, mental illness awareness and advocacy, and teaching others.
When I am not working, I spend my time with family and my furry babes. But I also have a passion for giving to others, recognizing individuals for their accomplishments or resilience and helping tell stories of extraordinary people – all in the hopes of inspiring others. My life goal is to help spread acceptance, giving to others and to support others to believe in themselves.
As an educator, my job is more than just teaching – I aspire to help prepare you for the “real world” after your educational journey. This means helping to foster personal accountability, confidence and positivity. I expect hard work from you, but I will give you the same back. I am in this for the long-haul and hope to spend the next 23 years in this academic community!
